What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR Therapy is an evidence-based treatment for trauma and other symptoms such as anxiety and depression. EMDR Therapy is recognized as an effective form of treatment for trauma and different disturbing experiences by organizations such as the American Psychiatric Association, the World Health Organization, and the Department of Defense.

EMDR Therapy is a robust, comprehensive 8-phase psychotherapy model that includes history taking, resourcing and stabilization, assessment, desensitization, installation, closure, and reevaluation.

EMDR Therapy can treat most presenting issues, such as PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, Pain, and loss, and can assist in the recovery from physical injury and illness. Relational EMDR Therapy incorporates exquisite attunement, and relational interweaves to help a person heal from significant neglect and attachment injuries.

How EMDR Therapy Works:

EMDR Therapy aims to help the brain process and integrate traumatic memories more adaptively. During an EMDR session, the therapist will guide the client through a series of eye movements, taps, or sounds while the client focuses on the traumatic memory. The eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation are thought to help the client process the memory by activating both the left and right sides of the brain. The therapist will help the patient notice any thoughts, emotions, or physical sensations that arise during the process and work with the patient to reframe negative beliefs and develop more adaptive coping strategies.

The Eight Phases of EMDR Therapy:

  • History-taking and Preparation
  • Assessment
  • Desensitization
  • Installation
  • Body Scan
  • Closure
  • Reevaluation
  • Integration

What EMDR Can Treat:

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is a psychotherapy approach that is effective in treating a range of mental health conditions including, but not limited to, PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), Anxiety Disorders, Depression, Phobias, Addiction, Eating Disorders, Chronic Pain, amongst others.

History of EMDR:

EMDR was developed in the late 1980s by Psychologist Francine Shapiro. Shapiro was taking a stroll in the park when she noticed that her negative thoughts and emotions dissipated as her eyes rushed back and forth.

Shapiro explored this observation further and developed a therapeutic approach based on eye movements called Eye Movement Desensitization (EMD).

Shapiro presented her findings at a conference in 1989 - and the approach gained popularity quickly. The technique was later refined to include other types of bilateral stimulation, such as tapping or sounds, and the name was changed to EMDR.

EMDR initially gained popularity as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but has since been used to treat a variety of mental health conditions. In 1995, the American Psychiatric Association recognized EMDR as an effective treatment for PTSD, and in 2004, the World Health Organization recommended EMDR as a first-line treatment for trauma.

Over the years, EMDR has undergone rigorous scientific study, and research has found it to be effective in treating various mental health conditions. Today, EMDR is widely recognized as a valid and effective form of psychotherapy.

The Research on EMDR:

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is considered an evidence-based practice for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) by several reputable organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Psychological Association (APA).

Numerous randomized controlled trials, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews have demonstrated the effectiveness of EMDR therapy for PTSD and other conditions, such as anxiety, depression, and phobias.

Additionally, EMDR therapy is as effective (if not more) as other established treatments for PTSD, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and exposure therapy.

EMDR therapy has also been recommended as a first-line treatment for trauma by several national and international organizations, including the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in the United States.

EMDR Intensives

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Intensive is a therapeutic approach that involves an extended period of EMDR therapy over several consecutive days or weeks. It is designed for individuals who have experienced complex trauma or have a history of multiple traumatic events that have not responded well to traditional talk therapy.

During an EMDR intensive, a client will work closely with one or more trained EMDR therapist to process and reprocess traumatic memories using specific techniques, including bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or sounds). The intensive format allows for a more focused and intensive experience, which can lead to faster and more profound healing.

EMDR intensives typically involve several hours of therapy each day over several consecutive days. The exact duration and frequency of the intensive will vary depending on the individual's needs and goals and the therapist's recommendation.

EMDR intensive can be a challenging experience, but it can also be very transformative, leading to significant improvements in symptoms related to trauma, such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD. It is essential to work with a trained EMDR therapist who can guide and support you through the process.

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)

We specialize in supporting our clients in overcoming outdated psychological patterns or adaptations that hinder their well-being. Our comprehensive services include specialized therapy protocols designed for efficient healing while using sublingual Ketamine medication.

We believe that healing facilitated by psychedelic medicine is inherently within everyone, with the medicine serving as a catalyst. However, utilizing the insights gained from these experiences requires active engagement and effort. Psychedelic drugs are used to address trauma, enhance creativity and problem-solving abilities, and foster spiritual exploration, yet the potential of these experiences can be overlooked.

We refer to this approach as "chemical-assisted psychotherapy." Every thought in the brain originates as a chemical reaction, forming ingrained neural pathways through repetition. These pathways shape our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, ultimately defining our sense of self.

We prioritize maximizing every aspect of our clients' experiences to promote greater wellness. We believe in the transformative power of real change, ensuring our clients have access to the joy and possibilities of a better life.

What is Ketamine?

Ketamine is a medication known for its use in surgeries and for pain relief. It disconnects the brain from the body, making you feel slightly spaced out.

But here's the exciting part: researchers have found that using ketamine in smaller doses and under careful supervision can help some people dealing with depression, PTSD, and mood issues, especially if other treatments haven't brought symptoms to resolution. A new option is now on the table for those struggling with mental health.

Of course, like any medication, there are potential side effects to watch out for, like feeling a bit out of sorts or experiencing changes in how your body feels. That's why having a doctor or medical professional overseeing things is crucial if you're considering KAP.

Our Training and Treatment Team

At Infinite Healing and Wellness, we can only take our clients as far as we want. Due to this philosophy, offering this treatment comes with tremendous responsibility. We sought out training from Resilience Behavioral Health Solutions, as the approach they specialize in and support (non-IV KAP) is most in line with our clinical approach and treatment values. This training was four days and included two experiential sessions that allowed our team to explore our own personal work through KAP.

Jennifer Montjoy has trained our preferred prescribers at Resilience and will support the protocol and approach our providers have also been introduced to implement.

Our trained clinicians participate in ongoing consultation to ensure your highest level of care.

Therapists who are currently offering KAP are Kelly O'Horo, Julie Russomanno, Bianca Giurgiu, Victoria Brandt, Carlyn Parker, Erin Steck, Kyle Payne, & Patrick O'Horo.

How Our Team was Trained

With over 16 years of experience in inpatient and outpatient settings, Jennifer Montjoy brings an integrated, holistic approach to her private practice and training. She has served as an integrative psychiatric provider for the past seven years.

Jennifer holds a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona, specializing in biobehavioral neuroscience. Her doctoral research focused on Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) and its clinical outcomes and impact on self-transcendence in depression and PTSD, making a significant contribution to the field of psychotherapeutic psychedelic research.

EFT Therapy

Emotionally-focused and emotion-focused therapy are a family of related approaches to psychotherapy with individuals, couples, or families.

EFT approaches include experiential therapy, systemic therapy, and attachment theory elements. EFT is usually a short-term treatment. EFT approaches are based on the premise that human emotions are connected to human needs. Therefore, emotions have an innately adaptive potential that can help people change problematic emotional states and interpersonal relationships if activated and worked through. Emotion-focused therapy for individuals was initially known as process-experiential therapy, and it is still sometimes called by that name.

EFT Therapy for Couples

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a type of therapy that is often used for couples experiencing relationship issues. EFT is based on the premise that the quality of a couple's emotional bond is critical to their relationship satisfaction and success. EFT aims to help couples improve their emotional connection with each other by identifying and addressing the underlying emotions and attachment needs that drive their interactions.

During EFT therapy sessions, the therapist works with both partners to identify and explore the emotions driving their relationship dynamics. The therapist helps the couple develop a deeper understanding of their emotional needs and vulnerabilities and communicate them effectively. The focus is on creating a safe and supportive therapeutic environment where partners can openly express their emotions and vulnerabilities.

EFT Therapy for Individuals

EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy) is a type of therapy that focuses on the emotional bond between individuals. EFT aims to help individuals develop more robust and more secure emotional connections with others, and it can be beneficial for individuals struggling with relationship issues or attachment problems.

During EFT therapy sessions, the therapist works with the individual to identify and explore their emotions and the underlying needs and fears that may be driving those emotions. The therapist then helps the individual develop a deeper understanding of their emotions and needs and effectively communicates them to their partner or others.

Biocommunication

Using Zyto Software

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a mind/body tool that utilizes biosensors. By measuring psychological parameters in real-time, the biofeedback software allows the individual to shift these parameters and induce healing.

“Biofeedback is a process that enables an individual to learn how to change physiological activity to improve health and performance. Precise instruments measure physiological activity such as brainwaves, heart function, breathing, muscle activity, and skin temperature. These instruments rapidly and accurately “feedback” information to the user. The presentation of this information—often in conjunction with changes in thinking, emotions, and behavior—supports desired physiological changes. Over time, these changes can endure without continued use of an instrument.”
